Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiarangi

Full English translation coming soon.

On February 20th, we had to leave the Marae early so that we could visit the last of the tree wananga, or Maori context-based universities, on our agenda, Te Whare Wānanga o Aotearoa. Although our time at the marae was extremely short, the welcomed us with so much love. During the poroporoaki (farewell ceremony), they presented us with a taonga (treasure), a talking staff. The feathers on the staff represent taking flight. The winding vine from which it was made is a vine that feeds off the life of another tree. It represents the gaining of knowledge, and these were the messages our marae hosts had for us.

Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiarangi would be the last wānanga that we would visit. After the powhiri (welcoming ceremony), Graham Hingangaroa Smith, a well-known scholar in the field of indigenous research, gave us a presentation where he told us about the university, consciousness of Maori educational politics, and the wānanga’s ties to other indigenous peoples world-wide.

Twenty years have passed since the founding of the school. Although it has experienced ups and downs, this school, which was born out of a small pre-fabricated building, has always focused on higher education.

Professor Smith’s speech was highly stimulating, and was extremely rich in suggestions for us.

Not only do we have to overcome the colonization of the heart, and therefore knowledge, cultures, and language, as Evan O’Brien explained, but we also have to change the way that we think. Professor Smith emphasized that we need to notice how the system that we live in that makes us think we are inadequate. In order for the school not to be enveloped in the colonization process, it isn’t necessary to be opposed to Western ways of thinking, but rather it is important to study our ways of learning. This means that indigenous theories of knowledge need to be further developed. This advice, that we need to identify and dissect unseen colonization, was extremely significant. At the end of our stay, Yuki Kouji, sharing the same sentiments, spoke to how we have to heal ourselves of the impact colonization has had on our ways of thinking.

Principal Westrupp outlines the values of Tai Wānanga

On February 15, we visited to Maori-based high schools, Tai Wānanga, and Ngā Taiātea Wharekura.

Principal Westrupp explains the individual learning plan in the study space
We were greeted by the Principal Toby Westrupp and the students at Tai Wānanga. After the powhiri (welcoming ceremony), Principal Westrupp gave us a presentation about the school where we learned about the values of the school. Each student has an individual learning plan tailored to their career aspirations, interests, and strengths. Health and well-being is strongly emphasized, with physical conditioning taking place every day at 8am. The school also provides a nutritious breakfast and lunch for students. Cultivating pride in students’ Maori heritage is also one of the core values, as are high expectations, the ability to inspire, and high achievement.

In order to be true to these values, Principal Westrupp explained that the learning environment is critical, so at the school, which only takes a small number of students so that each student can get personal attention, students study close to each other to reach their individual goals. After the presentation, we were taken on a tour of the school where we saw how each student was allowed to freely study individually in the comfortably arranged study space.

One student, who was studying business, showed us his textbook. Another student was studying French, and another studying science was diligently taking notes of their text in their notebook.

We couldn’t help but notice how different the ambition of the principal to create a learning environment is from back home in Japan.
